Feeding Your Snake

If you happen to be a vegetarian and expect your pet to be one, dream on, snakes only eat meat and it’s going to stay that way for good! For the newbie out there, feeding a snake might seem complicated at the beginning, but honestly, it really depends on the size of your snake. Most of the pet snakes would usually feed on rats or mice, the size of these live food shouldn’t be bigger than the width of your snake otherwise it might be difficult for your snake to swallow.

Now some snakes prefer to eat the dead rats, in other words, they don’t really care, as long as they get to eat, but for some snakes, they might want to feel wild and adventurous. Giving them the thrill of the hunt is probably a good idea, you can do that by putting them in a bigger space with the live rats in a box, and your snake will probably do a little hide and seek for a while with the mini-victim before savoring them. You would still have to consider a lot of factors with putting a live mice with the snake, some snakes loves to hunt in the dark therefore you might have to turn off the lights create the mood for the snake while he’s doing his thing with the rat and when it’s done you can slowly put the snake back to its habitat. Don’t even think about keeping the live rats near the snake if your snake is full, these rats might actually hurt your snake and trust us, you wouldn’t want that for you baby!

Just like humans, dogs, cats, and other kind of animals, snakes do get fat! Over feeding your snake can make it obese so lay low with the feeding, they usually eat once every week or ten days depending on the species so know your snake, you wouldn’t want it to get fat. There are also cases where your snake refuses to eat, this is very common but don’t panic. Your snake might refuse to eat because it’s the wrong time, most snakes prefers to eat when it’s night time, so try changing the time of feeding. Other factors could come from the temperature; you should always check if your snake is feeling too cold or too hot, humidity can make your snake lose appetite. If your snake is about to shed, this is definitely not the time to eat, so find another time to feed it. However, if worst comes to worst and its still not eating, we guess it’s about time you get your baby to the vet for a little check up, there might be other health problems that’s making your snake lose appetite.
